Tips on how to score high in search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN

There are quite a few techniques that if carried out correctly can improve your ranking greatly. On the internet there is no shortage of advice on this but what works and what doesn't work? Here are a few dos and don'ts:

  • Do make your web site informative and contextual.

  • Do put logically categorised information on different pages.

  • Do have some external links to your site.

  • Do link to other related sites especially ones that are a good source of information

  • Don't use images without textual replication. i.e. say your site sells fine wines, and you display all your wines' names by showing images of the labels of the wines. The search engine crawlers will not know about the wines unless you refer to them in your text as well.

  • Don't play automatic music, unless of course it is a music site then that would perhaps be ok.

  • Don't Submit your URL to search engines if it is still in the early stages of construction.
